Actual thickness as rolled is over 4.8mm. CPM 10V is a very high vanadium Crucible Industries Particle Metallurgy tool steel with extremely high wear resistance and good toughness. Its edge retention is among the best of all steels used to make knives. It is very hard to work in a hardened and tempered state, the majority of shaping and finishing should be done before heat treatment to save time and abrasives. Originally patented in 1978 it has been an industry leader in applications that need extreme wear resistance and in recent years has been utilised as a premium steel in the highest performance custom and small run production knives. Carbon – 2.45% Chromium – 5.25% Molybdenum – 1.30% Vanadium – 9.75% Manganese – 0.50% Silicon – 0.90% Sulphur – 0.07% CPM 10V can be heat treated with or without a cold treatment after quench to reduce retained austenite. CPM 10V tempered at low temperature after cold treatment may exhibit a slight increase in toughness and stain resistance, though it is nowhere close to a stainless steel. Recommended Heat Treatment *Seal blade in double crimped high temperature stainless steel tool wrap *Preheat to 825°C, hold for 5 minutes *Austenitise at 1080°C for 30 minutes *Plate quench *Cold treatment; domestic freezer, dry ice slurry, liquid nitrogen – the colder the better *Temper at 200-260°C for 2 hours, twice Recommended working hardness 62-66HRC *Alternatively, if not using cold treatment, temper at 540°C for 2 hours, twice, to take advantage of secondary hardening Expected heat treatment results Austenitise: 1080°C Temper: 200°C Hardness: 65.5HRC Toughness: Good Austenitise: 985°C Temper: 260°C Hardness: 61.5HRC Toughness: Higher Austenitise: 1120°C Temper: 540°C Hardness: 65HRC Toughness: Lower pppCPM M4 is a high vanadium special purpose high speed steel exhibiting better wear resistance and toughness than M2 or M3 in cold work punches, die inserts and cutting applications, for this reason it is widely used in competition cutting. Although it is hard to work with in a hardened and tempered state, it does keep superior edge retention.CPM M4 is a high vanadium special purpose high speed steel exhibiting better wear resistance and toughness than M2 or M3 in cold work punches, die inserts and cutting applications, for this reason it is widely used in competition cutting.
